For my birthday last year my precious friend, Marisja, treated me to the treat of all treats – High Tea at The Cape Grace. I prepared for the occasion by having a very light breakfast and then setting my alarm to arrive at the hotel arrive bang on time – we had to maximize our cake eating and tea drinking time! 🙂
We had the most wonderful time together… soaking up the atmosphere – beautiful proteas everywhere, the fire cracking in the corner, the piano music playing in the background and then, of course, the decadent spread waiting for us on the buffet table – just perfect!
The Cape Grace’s High Tea starts with a tiered stand of tartlets, finger sandwiches and savoury scones, and to drink you choose from a whole array of loose teas. The choice of teas were amazing but the only downer was that some of them were at an additional fee. It would be great if they were all included especially when you are paying so much anyway. It doesn’t detract from the experience in any way as there are still lovely choices included in the price.
After your plated food is cleared away, you are welcome to help yourself to items from the buffet table at your own leisure and order anything more to drink.
We made our first round of choices and then sat and chatted before returning to sample a few more items. The cakes were all very decadent but so delicious. It was a wonderful afternoon and one which we have pinky promised to return to Cape Town and repeat in 50 years when we are old and grey! ❤
I was called by a lovely lady who wished to order a cake to celebrate her father’s 90th birthday. After a relaxed consultation during which I got to hear many stories about her dad’s life, I suggested we build a cake around the theme of a tool box. There were going to be some grandsons at the party who would love nothing more than an iced cookie shaped like many of the tools their granddad used to own.
This cake was challenging in working out what materials to use to make it look the most realistic, but the part I loved the most was taking all the memories and stories I had written down during our chat and bringing them to life on and around the cake. I make some decorations out of fondant and iced some other pictures and words in buttercream.

A past client contacted me about making her birthday cake. She wanted a woodlands theme and, after a consult and cake tasting, we decided on a coffee sponge with a strong espresso icing. The cake was to resemble a tree stump and then have all the little plants and creatures you’d expect to find in a forest scattered around – toadstools, bracken, acorns… and, of course, fairies and their little friends (they are quite camera shy so you might not be able to see them in the photos)
This was a fun cake to make and all the hard work of shaping the little creatures paid off as I placed them on the cake – it really did look like a magical world.
The concept and styling of this shoot was by the lovely ladies at Green Goddess Flower Studio and the story behind it was as follows: The couple are stylish Americans who were going out for lunch in the city of Cape Town, whilst on a visit to South Africa. The romantic groom has planned a secret elopement and hired a photographer to capture the scene. The ‘groom’ asks the ‘bride’ to dress up and they wander through the streets of Cape Town supposedly on their way to lunch. When they enter a square, he has arranged for a wedding planner to be waiting with some cards saying ‘will you marry me’. He lifts her up onto a stone plinth in the square, then she looks down at him as he shows her the cards asking her to marry him TODAY! There is a Yes and No option – she says Yes of course! Then he presents her with a gift box (decorated with flowers) and inside is a flower ring (allowing the stylish bride to choose her own ring later). They rush off to the church and get married – the planner has bouquets, bouts and stationery (saying they eloped) all ready for them including a selection of bouquets for the bride. Then the lunch turns out to be a small reception planned for them with a small dessert and cookie bar and martini tray. After lunch, they wander through the city some more looking at the amazing architecture and reveling in their special moments.
How great, hey? Such fun to provide the iced cookies and macaroons to fit in with this sweet love story!

Last weekend Sugar Doodle hosted another workshop at The Real Toy Company in Pinelands. Each child made 2 mini rainbow cakes and they all turned out great! Well done everyone, I hope you had fun! 🙂

After a fabulous summer that held on for as long as it could, the temperatures dropped suddenly and just like that thick socks, extra blankets and 5-cups-of-tea-before-9am were the order of the day. Winter had arrived! The single digit temperatures kicked me into rusk-making gear and after a few weeks of cold, our huge Tupperware container was well and truly full – to Kevin’s delight.
I am busy working on some new gourmet flavour combinations so keep your eyes peeled for their launch. In the meantime you can order 500g bags of rusks by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. At the end of last month I completed my Patisserie Course through La Petite Patisserie. We made a variety of different things during the course such as Creme brulee, Chocolate truffles, Cheesecakes and much more. My favourite class was the macaroons – those cute little pastels shells with the right crispy/ chewy ratio – my best! Click here to read more about that class.
